After teaching at risk teenagers for over 20 years, I have a few things to say. Well, actually more than a few things. I’ve never been at a loss for words.

For the last twenty years, I’ve been teaching the three “T’s”: the troubled, the troubling and the troublesome and have found that mixing the three “Ts” with the three “Rs” quite a humbling experience. Who was to know! Well I’ve learned a few things along the way, and I want to share them with you. I want to tell you the way I see it after all this time.

Where to start? I could comment on one of the latest hot topics- at risk kids. You know, the 30 or so percent of kids who drop out of school before graduating. These are the kids I work with all day. These are the kids who tell me how they see it, and you know, often I have to be sympathetic. If I were more of a cynic, I would say that it’s the schools that are at risk. After all without students…

Much is being said and done by school boards hoping to keep these at risk kids in school until they graduate. New curriculum and programs are being introduced with lightning speed to try to stem the exodus. I could comment on this topic given that I teach these kids in two of these new programs. But I have decided not to, at least for now. Instead, I will tell you how I see it on another topic: the teachers who teach these at risk kids- the teachers at risk.
