Make Me Want to Come to School.

“Make me want to come to school.” That’s what a grade nine student wrote in a questionnaire when I asked him to tell me what I could do to make learning easier. I was surprised by his answer, although I shouldn’t have been. After all, many students don’t want to come to school. They’re always telling me tell me how much they hate school. Come to think of it, I can remember thinking the same thing myself sometimes, but from a teacher’s perspective: make me want to go to school.

Being a teacher is a very demanding job. Any job where you are dealing with people all day is a very demanding job. But since I’m a teacher, I’m going to talk about teaching. That’s what I know best.

When I’m trying to “make me want to got to school”, I ask myself what is it about teaching that I love, and why am I not loving it now. In a way, I’m checking to see if what I’m doing is meeting my needs. I’m always checking to see if I’m meeting the needs of my students, but I often forget about my own needs. Of course, sometimes things are beyond my control. Sometimes I have to do things that I don’t particularly like; sometimes the only thing I can control about a situation is the way I think about it. If I think it’s a problem, then it is. If I can’t change the situation, I can change my attitude. That works- sometimes.
