Be
a pebble
on the river’s bed
Let
the strong swirling water
flow freely overheadThis is the second day in a row that things went wrong with exam supervisions at work . Grrr…I won’t bore you with all the details! It wasn’t until after the final bell rang, and all the kids had gone that I remembered Thich Nhat Hanh’s teaching about not getting caught up in the vicissitudes of daily life. He maintains that many of us are stressed out because we are in the habit of struggling against things. I usually try to go with the flow, but Hanh suggests that we don’t go with the flow but instead go beneath the flow. We should be like a pebble that rests on the river’s bed below the turbulance so as not to be affected by it. Easier said than done.
