groupFriday was the first day of the new semester and that meant I had to get to know a whole new set of students and the student had to get to know one another. I find it helps to have the students get to know one another as quickly as possible and like using the Three Step Interview as a team building activity. We talked briefly about interviews, the kinds of questions they could ask and what makes a good interview. I told them to think about the ones they’ve liked that they’ve seen on TV. At first the kids were a little tentative, but that didn’t last for much more than five minutes. The interviews can be done in groups of three or groups of four as explained below.

THREE STEP INTERVIEW

What is it?

A cooperative structure in which team mates interview one another on a particular topic.

How can I use it?

In a team of three, partner A interviews B, while C records key aspects of the response. Roles rotate after each interview, allowing all members the opportunity to be interviewed.

In a group of 4 – A interview B while C interviews D.

Reverse roles so that B interviews A and D interviews C.
