thanks for the outstanding idea, Elona. I hope this works with my South Korean students I'm teaching E.S.L. to. One class of middle schoolers especially is my 'complaining bunch'. This is most unusual here.. most of the Asian students seem to 'accept' the hard-working ethic with no negative feedback at all! This class I have however, is an EXCEPTION. I'm always looking for new ideas, ! :-)

Elona, this is a great idea. I will assign one of my unruliest students to the job as facilitator since he does most of the complaining. I'm going to have him handle all of the fights. Hopefully, this will stop him from doing it so much.
Thanks for the excellent idea.

Hello Elona,

I enjoy reading your blog very much. Got there through Jason Jarret's. Like your idea of a student to listen to the complaints (if you're still looking for a name, it could be "auditor"). I teach in France (budding teachers, so young adults) and am amazed at times by what comes over as lack of respect even from them. For example, sitting yawning at the teacher with no attempt to hide it or even cover up one's mouth. And when I commented on this being bad manners, they were surprised; I was the fossil!!

Oh well, gotta love 'em, haven't you?!

Keep going,

Carol

This is a great story. Do you still have a "listener"? Have the students come up with another name?

Isn't it funny how sometimes when we relinquish control we get some of it back. If we give kids more responsibility, they actually embrace that responsibility and somehow rise to the occasion.

Hi, I'm reading this as a parent of emotionally intense kids - Apparently they are angels in class and at other people's homes but at home - they let it ALL HANG OUT!

My site, http://www.myrollercoasterkid.com discusses the challenges of parenting kids like mine.

Anyway, one of the big issues at home is the whining and complaining and I think your idea to assign a 'listener' is fantastic and I think it could work in a family environment like mine where there are multiple children.

Classroom Facilitator doesn't work in the parenting environment but I can work with that, perhaps Empathy Officer of the Day ;)

By the way, I have also read "The Explosive Child" and agree it's well worth the read. My children have not been diagnosed with any particular 'disorder' and I think they are just emotionally intense children but this book was very helpful to me in helping me to understand and accept their temperaments.

Thanks for a great idea and I hope you wouldn't object to me referencing it on my site.
