I was reading Miss Profe’s blog today when I noticed the blog had a virtual pet. Cool. I want a pet for my class blog, too. So I went to the Adoption Centre site and eventually a sweet little black kitten with her own basket found her way to the class blog. She loves to play, and if you click on the “more” button you’ll find toys she loves to play with. She needs a name though, and I thought it would be fun to have my students name her so we’re going to have a ” Name the Kitten Contest”. Perhaps your blog would like a pet, too. There’s lots of choice. Drop in to our class blog and play with our new kitten. She’d love to play with you.

Update

I didn’t want to leave our class’ virtual kitten at school all alone, so I thought I’d bring her  home with me so I could feed and play with her until I go back to class. :)

I am glad you adopted.:) The kitty is adorable! I discovered the virtual pet over at Joe Dale’s blog. He’s in the UK, and helps language teachers to use technology in their teaching. Anyway, I’ll try and think of an appropriate name to offer up for the kitty.

    Hi Elona,
Thanks for telling me about the virtual pets. It seems like a lot of fun! I’m going to look into it for our classroom as well. How did your students take to it? I am wondering if the older students may find it a bit babyish. I find that my students are very worried about perceived ‘babyishness’. I think it is a product of their being in a special class.
Example - I have one student in particular who will close the door when we are playing something called The Budget Game. It is not an easy game by far, however he doesn’t want others to see him playing games at school because he thinks that others will see it as ‘babyish’ (though he loves to play it, too!).

    Tracy,
The girls in my grade 12 class loved the virtual pet. They all had suggestions for names. The boys didn’t say much mostly because they couldn’t see little kitty on the school browser. The girls found kitty by going on site at home. I find it amazing that these reluctant learners go on site to see what’s new for them to do. They even ask for more work. Imagine. I’m not sure what the problem is with the school site. I’m going to email the pet site to ask about the problem.

Yes, some of my students want me to close the door too. They are embarrassed to be in my class. That hasn’t happened this semester since I started the class blog and we’ve been doing all the cool projects. None of their other teachers are doing what we are and because it’s to do with blogs, Vokis, Voice threads, the kids think it’s cool. They even told me that they were impressed with me that I knew how to do all this. I guess they figure because I’m a special ed. teacher I can’t do much. Some kids think I teach special ed because I can’t teach any thing else. Some have even asked me when I’m going to be a real teacher. We have a nice discussion around that. :)

    Tracy,
Maybe your students would like to choose their own pets. You can have more than one. The girls liked the kitten. Maybe the boys would like the puppy or the monkey. The monkey is cute too.

    Coquette, how cute!

I was thinking of something Spanish. But, French is ok.:)

    Miss Profe,
Thanks, unfortunately the browser at school won’t show Coquette so she can’t “live’ at school.

    Gea,
I think your right. She’s probably hungry and your mouse is tempting her. :)
You can click on her and she’ll jump out of the basket and then if you click on the little “more ” button at the bottom you’ll see a can of cat food you can click on to give her and just to be sure she gets enough exercise, you can click on the ball and play with her. I used to play with her a lot when I first got her, but now I’ve been neglecting her a bit. I know, I know shame on me.
