Oh ok yes I understand you now :)

I'm a full time teacher in Australia and we get about 5 grades, so I have grade 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12. Would you suggest doing it for every class? I'm not sure what it's like in the USA.

I think it might be too hard because you might have a different set of rules (and posters etc) for every class, so different standards for each group? It's a lot of maintenance! Hehe :)

Any ideas??

Shella,
A group of students get one placemat or a large rectangular poster size piece of paper .Groups of four work best so you could have 5 groups of 4 and 2 groups of 5. They write their ideas on sticky pads and paste the pads on their placemat. If you don't have stickies then they just write their ideas directly onto the place mat. I've done it both ways. . Here's a link to another blog site where you can get a copy of placemat. http://lausliteracy.blogspot.com/2009/02/graphic-organizer-placemat.html I'll send you the slideashare by email.

Hi Elona!

I'm a new teacher and I always liked the idea of the class coming up with their own rules, or rather "behaviour agreements" ;) but I'm scared that it will run amok! Particularly with a naughty class...

But I love your idea with the sticky notes and placemat! Can I just ask... do you mean each student gets a placemat? Or a group of 5, and each group fills in the placemat poster i.e. one student in each box/section? So if I've got 30 kids, I'll end up with 6 placemats? And then they rewrite their ideas on sticky notes? (By the way, the "placemat" link doesn't seem to work?)

Also, could I please have a copy of your slideshow? That would be excellent!! :) Thank you!

Wow, surely appreciate your dedication to this topic. Have been stumbling on various sites and i surely like the simplistic design here. Anyways, humor is rare and i wouldn't like to have a moment in my life where i have nothing to look upon and laugh, hence Post Bookmarked :D

Rani,
I'm delighted to share my Powerpoint. As for resources facilitating discussions, are you familiar with Barry Bennet's work and his book Beyond Monet. He has some excellent resources and suggestions. http://www.beyondmonet.ca/ They can be used with students and adults alike. Chapter 5 p. 95 has a host of strategies you can use for any age. We use these strategies at staff meetings. Stepping Out http://www.pearsonprofessionallearning.ca/steppingout/index.html is another excellent resource with lots of good strategies to promote authentic discussion.

Hope this helps.

Update
Rani, I tried sending you the powerpoint but the email just keeps bouncing back as undeliverable.
