I’ve tried all kinds of imaginative things to get kids to do homework. But, I’ve never thought of having my students watch videos of my lessons at home and then do their homework based on those lessons with me in the class. That’s thinking outside the box. That’s what two teacher have done and getting world wide attention for it. Congratulations! Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams came up with this idea and it seems to be working. those all important test scores are up. :)

Take a moment to watch “Never Lecture in Class Again” and see if that’s something you could adapt and use for your students. Do you think that’s the way we should or even could be going?

Thanks to @coolcatteacher at Twitter for the link to the video.

    Hi Elona,

Another very interesting post and video — thanks! I think this is a great direction to be taking, especially since our students spend a very large chunk of their time after school looking at screens, as the teacher in the clip says. And as for whether we “should” do this — I think we should do whatever we can to keep school relevant and interesting for our students. I always get a little bristly when people suggest that we should stick to traditional methods/texts/ideas because otherwise we’re going to “lose” something…like it or not, students are already getting lost in the system because they’re not engaged. This is a good example of how we can incorporate their skills and interests in a meaningful way in the classroom.
