I’m always having to remind my  students to use standard English in their writing assignments.

” None of that MSN English , ” I tell them. ” I don’t want you using those short forms that you use when text messaging or emailing friends. I want standard English. This is school, after all.”

Imagine my students’ surprise on Tuesday when I tell them not to use one word of standard English when doing their next creative writing assignment. Yes, no standard English allowed. In fact, I don’t want them to use any words at all. I want them to use  emoticons to tell their story. lol :)

I got this idea after watching Rives’ featured this week on TED.com. I invite you to view the video. It’s only 3 minutes long and very entertaining.

I can hardly wait to hear my students’ reaction to the assignment and read their stories. Maybe we can even create a Sideshare to feature the stories. Now, that would be fun.
